How can I fix a large cigarette burn in my carpet?
Suffering

I was very involved with something on my computer one day. I had the window open, which was blowing a breeze, and blew my Just lit cigarette out of the ashtray. I didn't notice. Now I feel really stupid, because it happened not once, but twice. I'm renting and will be moving soon. I don't want to have to pay for a new carpet if I can help it. Any suggestions? I've already thought about cutting a piece but I can't find any place where it wouldn't be noticed, seeing how the baseboards here are carpeted. I can't take an edge piece.
Say I did find a place to steal a pc. of carpet, what could I glue it down with that would stay even when carpet cleaned?

She's been eating to many cat biskits.... go in the closet or any out of the way dark spot, and trim some carpet off the top till you have enough to glue in the burn marks. Basically what your doing is gluing small pieces of trimmed off carpet yarn into the burn mark, you might want to trim away some of the burned edges, so when you glue the new material in, you won't be able to see the burn. I've done this with burns in car seats also. Cut it up small, if done right you won't be able to see the burn, as it will be filled with carpet material of the same color and is virtually invisible.

unknown Japanese / oriental antique possible ashtray or match holder, its musical, please help identify?
VTG RETRO GREEN ORANGE SPECKLE CERAMIC LARGE ASHTRAY

I have recently been given this strange musical oreintal display piece.

Im not quite sure what it is though! I think it could possible be a reproduction japanese match stick striker and holder / cigarette holder and ashtray.

Please take a look at the larger pictures and let me know what you think.

I have trawelled the internet with every possible keyword and still came up with nothing, how do you value something you cant find any info on?

The only other thing i can tell you is that its not magnetic, and i cant find any hallmarks anywhere.

Many thanks

That's a nice desk cigarette case/music box. It will be listed as 'tobacciana', stuff having to do with tobacco, or 'tobacco-bilia, same thing. Ebay generally has a few in the tobacco dept.

I used to collect smoking paraphanelia and have seen several of them in different forms. The lid may start the music or I've seen some where pushing 'Papa-san' will start the music.

It's a fairly generic item and very interesting to smokers.

As to value...well, .. it's worth what you can get for it.! (oh great, that's a big help!) lol.... if I saw it in a shop, I'd give $20 or $25 for it, but there is no way to tell what it may be worth to someone else.

EDIT: That Sankyo movement is the 18-note they've been making for years. They make music movements for just about every kind of music box. Google them up and you'll see bushels of music boxes with Sankyo movements.

How do you account for housing lease violations like smoking or having a pet?
VTG GREEK ROMAN GREEN CERAMIC LARGE ASHTRAY

I had tenants move out. The lease states no smoking in the house. The place reeks of smoke and there are ashtrays filled with ash left behind. There are burn marks in the carpet, but not enough to have it removed. They weren't supposed to put holes in the walls either, but there are large holes from shelves, speakers, and furniture. How do I charge for this from the security deposit?

I would replace everything, all carpeting, all window coverings due to cigerette smoke. Discusting. You have to get rid of everything to get the smell out, as well as repaint the walls and ceiling.

You can charge for large holes if they actually require a patch, but a little fill from a picture hanger is normal.

Second hand smoke and how to deal with it?
VINTAGE LARGE CERAMIC GREEN & GOLD LEAF PALM ASHTRAY

Everytime I visit my gramps I'm subjected to vicious second hand smoke because my aunt is his caretaker and she smokes like a chimney. She's so hardcore that she has three ashtrays for every room in the house, not to mention two packs near them. She chainsmokes upon waking in the morning, all throughout the day, and right after dinner. It's f***ING disgusting! Of course I can't say anything about it because it'd be rude, it is her home too!

But I'm getting an itchy throat and I feel a sinus infection coming on, too. The clothes in my suitcase - which I haven't even taken out yet! - also reek of smoke!

So my question is - what can I do to protect myself while I'm visiting? I hear drinking a steady and large amount of green tea works. Any other suggestions?

I help an elderly disabled friend, who was chain smoking, I asked a similar question on here a while back.

What I did was bring a leaflet from the chemist about the dangers of passive smoking and showed it to her. It made no difference.
So I asked on Y answers, and lots of people said stay away.
So I told her clearly, that I didn't like breathing in her cigarette smoke, and when I visited her, I got out as quick as possible when she smoked, and even when a relative of hers smoked a cigarette there.
She made the connection, and stopped smoking while I was visiting her, she puts out her cigarette as I arrive.
Now when her relative comes once a week, I move to another part of the flat and turn on the extraction fan in the bathroom.
We now have a understanding.

But in your case I am concerned for your gramps (is that Grandfather? I don't hear that in England), he has to breath in all that smoke, and it won't do him any good.

I am afraid you must say what concerns you, it is not rude to tell someone politely that the smoke makes you feel sick, and if necessary arrange to see you Gramps when she it due to go out.
The only safe way to be a smokey atmosphere is by wearing a suitable gas mask.

How much is it worth?
Green Ashtray

I have a large, green, Blenko glass ashtray. It is in good condition. Nice heavy glass. I know its hard to judge without seeing, but does it have any worth?

I would hold onto that if I were you. I live in the area where Blenko glass is made and the company is apparently getting ready to shut it's doors. It is my guess that if Blenko closes permanently then the price of the Blenko glass floating around out there would only rise. Hold onto it for a couple of years then take it and have it appraised.
You can read about Blenko closing here;
