Box is possibly light wood Balsa or cedar. 4 1/2" x 4 1/2 " (width and length) and 7" tall.

How about checking eay to see if anything is listed. If not, take it to a reputable antique dealer who may be able to give you some info.
Have you tried to do a "search".........

Once you sand them, you can either restain them another color or paint them. Once you have the boxes the base color you desire, mix one part white glue with one part water. You can also buy Mod Podge in either a matte or gloss finish. Mist the image you wish to decoupage with water (to avoid bubbles) and then paint the decoupage medium on the back of the image. Smooth out the image to remove wrinkles or bubbles, a credit card or brayer works well to do this. Allow the images to thorughly dry and apply at least 3-5 more coats of decoupage medium. You may need to lightly sand or steel wool in between coats to remove the brush strokes. Once you have the desired number of coats, seal the entire item with two coats of a non-yellowing polyurethane.

but it still has a horrid aroma. It's not a tabbacco smell, more like an "old" wood smell and it smells on the outside aswel as the inside.
The box is made of plywood and the outside has some very nice decoration on it, probably done with a soldering iron.
Any suggestion for removing the smell without spoiling the box please?

fill the box with scrunched up newspaper and close the lid - leave for a couple of days and the newspaper will absorb the smell

however, it does not come with a Hygrometer. Does you know of any other good humidors with both a humidifier a hygrometer and can be engraved on the top?

if you really want to get him this specific humidor, you can always pick up a hygrometer at a tobacco shop. they come in a variety of styles (and prices) and some are even digital. you can also get humidifiers there, and most can be mounted right on to the lid of the humidor

the box has two hinges that are covered in greent tape.. No other marking on box inside lid or out. does anyone know the year I have searched on ebay on other sites but can't find this on. on bottom. cigars where between 15 and 20 cents.

Judging by the price I would presume around 1940's. Turn of the century would have been no more than .5 cents because Ive collected antiques for a long time now and found that to be the norm around that time. It was the invent of the five and dime time of Woolworth and such. Between fifteen and twenty was a steeper price and that coincides to around the great depression time. It should be pretty close to what I just said, if not I would be quite surprised if it was anything sooner or later.
