Cigar & Humidor?
cigars

I just got a new humidor for my cigars, now do I take off the plastic wraper from the cigars before placing them in the humidor or does it mater ??? : )

If you open them they will absorb un-needed humidity, the wrapper with the proper humidity outside the wrapped will better preserve the original taste.

What is the correct way to 'break in' a new cigar humidor?
Coolidor

I just bought a nice glass top cigar humidor and I'm curious to know what the proper procedures are to 'breaking it in.' I've read online that you never want to wipe the wood with any kind of water, though the instructions that came with the humidor say to wipe the insides with distilled water. Which way is correct?

I also purchased a propylene glycol solution for the humidifiers.

Gently wipe down the inside with distilled water. You don't want to soak it, but you do want to get some moisture into the wood. After you wipe it down, add the humidifiers and close it. Let it stand for a day or 2. Your hygrometer should read 65%-70% humidity. If it is reading lower, wipe it down again and close it for another day. If you live in a colder area, and recently turned the furnace on, it will probably take a bit longer to bring up the humidity because of the very dry air circulating in the house. Keep it in an area where the heat will not blow directly on it, and check the humidity often. With the glass top, you will be able to do this with the lid closed, so you won't lose moisture trying to make sure it is humid enough.
I use propylene glycol in one of my humidors, and it seems to hold the humidity and doesn't spike high or low as much as my humidor that I use distilled water in. The distilled water humidor dropped to 58% the day after I turned on the furnace, the propylene glycol only dropped to 63%, both were at 68% the day before. I have had nothing bad to report about it, except for a higher price to refill.

how does a cigar humidor work?
Cigar Aficionado

im looking into a cigar humidor but wondering how does it work and how long will it keep my cigars fresh? what do i have to do with it in regards to changing the humidifier or what not?

I've had a humidor for several years now.

The purpose of the humidor is to keep your cigars at peak freshness. Ideally, conditions for your sticks should be at about roughly 70% relative humidity and 70 degrees F.

In your humidor, you will have a humidification system in which you will put the solution - usually 1:1 distilled water and Propylene Glycol. The PG acts as an agent that keeps the Relative Humidity inside your humidor balanced. A hygrometer will measure the RH so you can be assured you are at the correct level. Be sure you calibrate your hygrometer.

Given proper care, your cigars will keep for years.
Some people really value properly aged cigars (they will develop a "bloom" over time - a fine white crystal that looks like powder).

Please note that Spanish Cedar works very well at maintaining a humidor at the proper humidity. Do NOT buy any humidor containing aromatic cedar - this is NOT the same type of wood.

Will a hygrometer made for a cigar humidor also work for a room?
humidor (4)

I'm looking at different models of digital hygrometers and it says that most of them are made for cigar humidors. Would this also work for measuring the humidity in a room? I'd like to keep tabs on the humidity of my basement!

Sure it will work. Just keep in mind that the sampling area, or should I say, volume, will be relatively small.

How does one clean an old cigar humidor?
wood boxes (3)

It's a simple wooden humidor with cedar lining. I bought it when I was in college a few years back, and made the mistake of putting flavored cigars in with non flavored cigars. Are there any methods to cleaning the humidor so that I can start collecting cigars again?

Thank you for your input

If you're just looking to get the smell of the flavored cigars out, you could give it a light sanding and leave it open for a few days, or get some baking soda or charcoal and seal it up inside for a few days. Either one should get rid of the 'flavor'.

Your First Cigar Humidor

Your First Cigar Humidor
By Jennifer Jordan

Many of you who have just joined the cigar revolution may wonder if you need to purchase a cigar humidor, quietly mumbling to yourself, I already had to buy a lighter, now this! While some people do believe that keeping cigars in a plastic bag with a damp towel is sufficient enough to keep them suitable, nine out of ten cigar lovers likely splurge on the humidor. And, of course, nine out of ten dentists would probably agree.

This is because cigars adapt to their surroundings, absorbing their environment like a sponge. If they are kept in an ill-suited environment, they will age to be ill-suited cigars, disappointing both their parents and the person who bought them. On the flip side, however, is the fact that if cigars are placed in a well-suited environment, they will age to become well-suited for even the most seasoned connoisseur.

For those who have yet to purchase a humidor for your cigars to call home, you might be confused as to what a humidor is and whether or not you should buy one. They may seem confusing, like there are a lot of types and brands, each one begging for a chance to age your cigar. However, they are really pretty simple; a humidor is what it sounds like: a box or a room that contains constant humidity. Basically, its the cigars version of Florida.

While many cigar shops have room sized humidors, a walk-in humidity closet where patrons can shop for cigars, when purchasing a humidor for personal use the size doesnt need to be comparable: you dont need to turn your spare bedroom into a humidor, replacing your bed set and angering your spouse. A small wooden or glass humidor box will suffice, holding a few dozen cigars, keeping them at the perfect temperature and helping them to grow old gracefully.

Humidors all contain hygrometers, a device used to monitor humidity levels. This helps cigar lovers to keep their humidors around the ideal humidity of 65 to 70 percent....
