I'm pretty sure ive had both but im not experienced enough to know taste difference and i cant tell by its appearance.
Here's one of the best resources on the Internet for identifying counterfeit cigars. Don't kid yourself, even so-called experts can be fooled, and even cigars purchased at Casa del Habano have been found to be counterfeit.

sommer 2008-holidays on Cuba ...so, that is a production of original cuban cohiba cigars
How much would one genuine low end Cohiba cost? Should I even try my luck on the black market?
Things you need to look at...
1. The box; if it comes in a box with a glass lid, it's a fake. The warranty label stating that it's from the Republic of Cuba must be clear and defined, not blurry. On a real box, there should be a date of manufacture on the bottom of the box.
2. The cigar; When you roll it between your fingers, it should feel consistently firm and putty like. If it has squishy spots, it's a fake. The cigars should be a uniform chocolate color, not inconsistent light/darker tones. The Cohiba label should have raised gold lettering, and the label should be bold print and in deep color. If the print is bland and washed out, it's a fake. The label on the cigar should also be 15mm, while the fakes are 17mm.
Depends on what type of Cohiba cigar you want to buy. Usually $1 for mini's to $15+ for their premiums. It's a very good cigar, and well worth the price, in my humble opinion. =)
Here's a well respected site to purchase cigars online. Type "cohiba" in the search box to see what they have in stock: http://www.cigarsinternational.com/search.asp

i have been given a box of genuine cohiba esplende(?) cigars. problem is, they are 2 years old. i'm not a cigar nut, but i'd love to bring these back to life. is there a way to accomplish this?
Put a lightly damp paper towel into a large ziploc. Put the box of cigars in to the ziploc. Voila. You'll have to go by feel to know when the are ready. Chances are that they will never taste like they did. A lot of the essential oils will have evaporated.

No because the box was made in cuba is a cuban box made by cuban peoples.

Press Release: Counterfeit Cohibas Seized
This just goes to show how careful you need to be when buying high end cigars.
General Cigar announces that federal and Florida state law enforcement officials yesterday seized more than 3,000 counterfeit COHIBA® cigars from seven tobacco retail stores located in prime tourist areas of Key West, Florida.
Individual cigars were sold at approximately $20 apiece. Based on current estimates, the approximate street value of goods seized was more than $60,000.
The counterfeit cigar seizures followed a lengthy investigation conducted in cooperation with General Cigar Company, which is the exclusive owner of the COHIBA trademark in the U.S. The lead law enforcement agency for yesterday’s seizures was the U.S. Homeland Security Investigations, assisted by U.S. Customs and Border Protection, the Florida Alcoholic Beverages & Tobacco Bureau of Law Enforcement, and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.
Dan Carr, president of General Cigar said, “The seizure of counterfeit COHIBA cigars yesterday represents a clear victory in General Cigar’s fight to protect our cigar bands from counterfeiters and trademark infringers. We look forward to continuing to cooperate with federal and state law enforcement officials in Florida and have offered to assist in any prosecutions and future investigations.â€
