If tin alone is impervious to magnets, is there a common alloy or plating process that would lead someone to think that something is made of (pure) tin when actually it has some iron or steel incorporated? I'm thinking particularly about the small metal containers that Altoids are marketed in. Are they tin or some other metal?
Hi Paul C,
Tin is not impervious to magnets, the magnetic field goes through it. Tin is not attracted by magnets.
'Tins' used to be containers made of thin mild steel that were tin plated to resist corrosion. Nowadays your altoid 'tin' might be a thin steel press-formed box with rolled edges and a little, similarly shaped, lid - possibly tin plated - magnets will stick to this. It could also be Aluminium alloy with an anodised finish - magnets will not stick to this.

why is pure tin safe to drink from? its for element project
Tin is relatively non-toxic, as it is not readily absorbed by your body when it is ingested. This means i'll just through the cycle and end up in the other end if you ingest it, however "organotin compounds" can be toxic to sustainable levels and have the general form R3SnX often this happens in harbors when tin from paints leaches into the water and subsequently enters the food chain. This will mostly affect marine life, but it can be detected in human as well (as we eat fish!). So tin can be toxic but its rare.
I wouldn't drink tin anyways.
Read http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tributyltin for more info on tin toxicity.
how reactive is it and how many valence electrons can it have?
how can cassiterite be purified into pure tin? where can cassiterite be found?
tin can have a +4 or +2 charge.
tin is not that reactive as far as metals go, since the most reactive metals are in group one. In its group, tin is pretty reactive, since reactivity decreases as you go down a group.
whats the hardness of pure tin on moh's scale?
This source values it at 1.8 Mohs, most others quote it at being in the range 1.5-2 Mohs.
1. How many grams of tin are contained in a 2 lb sample of ore that is 85% pure tin?
2. What is the volume percent of oxygen in air, if it is found that 150 L of air contain 48g of oxygen? The density of oxygen at this temp is 1.4 g/L
3. What is the percent purity of an alcohol solution with a density of .84g/mL, if 8mL of the solution contain 2 mL of alcohol? The density of pure alcohol is .79g/mL
for number 1, you turn pounds into grams, so about 454 grams per pound, then multiply 454 by .85 to get 385.9 grams of tin
Ok, I really need help with this,, but what are the flame test colors for pure:
-Carbon
-Silicon
-Germanium
-Tin
-Lead
Or if they dont have pure elements....what are the closest ones....
Please include Sources. Thanks.
Carbon, Silicon and Germanium usually give no color in the flame. [Flame tests are usually done for Metals.]
Tin is bluish white.
Lead is a pale green or blue.
